My name is Caren Cox Miller. I’m related to the Downer family. Johnie Magnolia Downer is my G Grandmother. Her daughter (my grandmother) was Johnie Allene Berry Cox. I have a photograph that came from the Downer family pictures that my grandmother gave my dad. It’s a soldier in a Confederate uniform. I think its Benjamin Franklin Downer.

If you’re interested in seeing it I’d love to forward it to you. Maybe you could help me identify it. It’s funny, but the family resemblance between this soldier and my dad (when he was young) is uncanny! Please let me know if you’re interested.

Sincerely,

Caren Miller

By the way…I have some other picture you might be interested in, too. I look forward to hearing from you.

My name is Caren Cox Miller. I sent you an email to TTPhotoInc@comcast.net from my work email address. I wasn't sure if you'd get it there, so I'm trying this address.

I'm writing because I am a member of the Downer family, too. My great grandmother is Johnie Magnolia Downer, and her daughter, Johnie Allene Berry Cox, is my grandmother. I googled Downer and got your site and was so surprised to see the pictures of your ancestors because I have some of the same pictures, as they are my ancestors too!

I have some pictures you might be interested in, one of which is a Downer in a Confederate uniform who I'm told is either William Alexander Downer or his brother Benjamin Franklin Downer. I think it's Benjamin because he has light hair and eyes, and the description I've read on William says he had dark hair and eyes.

Another picture I have is of Johnie Magnolia Downer with her family all around her not long before she died.

I'd love to hear from you.

Sincerely,
Caren Cox Miller

Hello Caren,

Thanks for contacting me. I get really excited when a long lost relative finds my web site.

Johnnie Magnolia Downer is my grandfather's sister. My mom, Johnie Viola Downer Turner, was named after her aunt.
So far, seven relatives have contacted me, after finding the web site.

My mom left a ton of old photos, which were stored in a trunk. My sister and I have often wondered why our parents
didn't get the photos out and point out the people in them, but then, as a kid, I wouldn't have paid any attention anyway.

Relatives who have contacted me have been able to identify unknown people in photos on the site.

Yes, I am very very interested in seeing any photos that you have.

Warm Regards,

Terry Turner

Thank you for page 8! I wonder why it was missing from both of ours. I bet my Aunt Betty Lou doesn’t have that page either. I’ll have to send it to her.

My dad told me the picture of your mom was my Granny’s cousin, but I didn’t know her name. That’s so cool! I love making these connections! Even though Granny’s name was Johnie, most people called her Allene. My grandfather usually called her Johnie A.

I remember my grandmother talking about all her kinfolk to other family members, so the names are very familiar. It’s great to be able to put names to faces. My dad thinks the picture of Mattie Downer looks like his Aunt Katie (Granny’s ½ sister).

Any idea who the soldier is? If not, maybe one of the other Downers who got in touch with you knows.

Hi Caren,

Please find attached a copy of page 8 of Downers of the South.
My copy didn't have page 8 either, but my sister (Adrienne Joyce Turner Taylor)
sent me this copy.

I got the last copy of Downers of the South. Pat mailed it to someone else,
but had the wrong address, and it was returned. Adrienne got it for me.

I met Pat one time many years ago. He came to my house to visit my mom,
while she was here in Las Cruces visiting us.

Adrienne and her husband, Ben, know Pat well, they visited him several
times when he was in a nursing home in Lubbock.

Yes, Hardy is my grandfather.

I'll check out the spelling of Ethel name. There is a photo
of her gravestone some where on the site.

Thank You, Thank You for the photos - they are absolutely fantastic.
I had never seen the photo in color of my mom before.

Did you know who she was, before you saw the photo of her on my site?

More Later,

Terry

They totally messed up the page with my family on it too. I actually wrote an addendum to it. I'll send it to you with this.

Isn't that funny...Johnie A and Johnie V! Haha!

Looking at the pictures of your mom when she was older, I can most definitely see the family resemblance between her and Granny. Those are some strong genes! ☺

I looked up the records on ancestry.com for Hardy Warren Downer. As a child when he lived with his parents, his name is spelled Hardy. Then one the records when he was an adult (at the time your mom was 5) he spelled his name Hardie. So who knows????

On this same census website they spell Ethyl McCollum Downer’s name Ethel. Maybe when the census takers took the names down they just spelled them the way they wanted to.

Here’s the website where you can see that Francis Downer fought in the War of 1812 with the Anson Guards…not during the Revolutionary War as stated on page 2 of the genealogy papers we have on the Downers. The Daughters of the American Revolution also told me that Francis Downer is not on any roster for the Rev. War.

It was great talking to you! I’ll get the story of Granny typed up for you when I get a chance. I’ll also scan the service record of William Alexander Downer and get those to you. As soon as I receive the service cards on Benjamin Franklin Downer I’ll get those to you too.

I been antiquing with her before and I'm looking at antique textbooks (I'm a teacher) while she's looking at pictures.

My husband, Ray, said that you called and will call back. That's great! If you'd like to have my Granny's picture of your mom with the color in it, you can have it. I'll send it to you. Just let me know.

I think the Downers had a thing about naming girls boys' names. My Granny's sister I knew the best was Aunt Bobbie, and she changed her name to Bobbie from Grady! Haha!

Her name before she had it legally changed - Willie Brown Downer.
Warren Hardy Downer had three girls - but wanted boys.
Johnie Viola, Eddie May and Willie Brown.

This is the first time I’ve seen this photo.

I think I've seen this fur collar in other photos.

Adrienne and I have discussed several times the fact that although Hardy's family was of modest means,
his girls wore fabulous clothes.

Thank you Thank you Thank you!!

Terry,

I got an email from my Aunt Betty Lou and she said she remembers your grandfather going to see them in the Rio Grande Valley. Here’s what she wrote:

I’m not that interested in genealogy myself, but Shella seems to be. I know when I first saw the book, I noticed there were lots of errors in it. I really haven’t had time or interest in it since then. However, I will check it out and see if I can help with my part of the family. There are lots of errors in Aunt Katy’s family. Peggy or Joyce would probably be the one to fix that. (She had three husbands and 3 children by the first, Peggy, Joyce, & Donnie; three by the second, Judy, Darla, & Hank; and two by the third, Margaret & Keno. She was first married when she was 13, I think.

I know that Mother told me that her father died when she was 9 months old. She thinks she can remember him holding her up in the air over his head. She also told me that grandma married granddad Reed when she was 5 years old. His name was James Bremlen Reid. She did not know about the spelling of the middle name. I have a note that I wrote all this on and put into a berry bowl that she gave me. Grandma gave these bowls to her when she and daddy married and when she gave them to me she told me some of these things. She told me that Aunt Ruby was born in 1898. I think she was the oldest. I noticed on the license that her mother and daddy were married in 1887 and she was born in 89. I also know that mother had a sister that died young with diabetes. I think it was Maxie, but might have been Jessie Mae. I think they both died before I was born. One of them had a son named Nelson Lackey. Uncle Gene raised him. He and Alva Gene were like brothers. They lived in West Texas and I remember both of them. Mother always kept up with them. I don’t k think Hardy was mother’s brother. I think he was an uncle. I know she had an Uncle Hardy that used to come to see us. He also had diabetes and had spells when he would be unconscious until he was given a coke or something. Aunt Ruby has two children still living that might have information for you, Warren and Billie Jean. I have their phone numbers I think if you want to pursue that.

Hope you can make a little sense of this.

The book she’s referring to is the “Downers of the South” book.

Shella is my cousin, Kay’s, daughter…Betty Lou’s granddaughter. Shella is the one who is interested in genealogy.

So, I don’t guess the girl in the picture with James and Johnie M could be Granny. It must be the oldest daughter who lived, Ruby. It’s an awesome picture. I’m thrilled my dad has it!

One more solved! :)

I feel badly for being upset with my aunt :) I get fired up sometimes... I talked to her today and she is going to help me get information on Johnie M's family that's wrong in the book so I can retype it. I told her that I know she's not really into it, but she's got the contacts I need. She said she's "on it" and put in a call to Katie Berry's oldest daughter to start getting info. Aunt Katie had 3 husbands and 8 kids. Her info in the Downer book is all wrong. Betty Lou said that there's other stuff wrong and she's going to call people to get that information too. I also talked her into loaning a ton of old pictures to my cousin, Su-z, (who is a teacher and is retiring in May), so she can scan them and put them on disc. She said she's got pictures of your grandpa from when they came to the Valley to visit Granny and Pampa. Can't wait to see them. When I get the corrections typed and the pictures on disc I'll get them to you, too.

Talk to you later,
Caren

A Different Christmas Poem

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.

The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the
sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.

Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..

To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."
"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.

No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

" So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

PLEASE, would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many
people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our

festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people
stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us.
